From the Editor:
What’s going on at Jetsetmodern? After nearly seven years online as a labor of love, Jetsetmodern has gone pro, and we do mean pro. We’re now a real magazine, with features and departments and the whole nine yards.
What this means to you is that you’re going to have a new issue every other month, filled with fun and useful and totally cool stuff. What it means to us is that we’ll working harder than ever to fulfill our commitment to you.
What it does NOT mean is that we’re going to start charging readers. We have been free, and we are staying free. Yes, we’re going to have advertising, but our advertising will be from those companies that offer the furniture, accessories, art and services you want. And we hate pop-ups and pop-unders as much as you do, so ads aren’t going to make Jetsetmodern hard to navigate. Banners are what we use, so you can click through to what interests you.
We intend to remain as opinionated and quirky as ever. If we like something, we’ll be saying so. If we think something stinks, you can bet we’re going to say that, too.
We mean to work in partnership with readers. We’re going to give you the best of everything that’s modern, every issue. That’s how we can help you. How can you help us? Obviously, every ad you look at encourages our advertisers, and that benefits us. We’re also adding a new feature to articles called Tip Jars. If you like an article, you’ll have a chance to give that author a buck or two in appreciation through PayPal ™. It’s completely optional, but you’ll be encouraging authors to give you more and more.
We also mean to be the most reader-oriented publication available anywhere, online or off. If you have a compliment, email me. If you want to contribute, email me. If you can’t stand what we’re doing, EMAIL ME. You may not get exactly the reply you’d like, but I’m going to pay attention to what you say, I guarantee it.
We have some people to thank, for helping us during our first seven years. People like Pierre Koenig, Eames Demetrios, and Gordon and Jane Martz have opened their archives and memories to give us great content. People like Cara Greenberg at Modernism, Patty Poore and Mary Ellen Polson at Old House Interiors, and Jack Yan at Lucire, helped us to shed our wannabe status and to become magazine professionals. And people like you kept saying great things about us. That helped more than we can tell you. We’re grateful to you all.
I also want to extend my personal thanks to Jetsetmodern’s publisher, Joe Kunkel. Joe was the first person to publish me, all those years ago. He is the force behind everything you see here, and a fantastic guy to work for. He has done more for collectors of modernist design than almost anyone else I can name; I call him The Anti-Martha. He’s my friend - and I assure you, he’s yours, too.
Hang out with us, read us, write to us anytime. Jetsetmodern is more than a magazine - it’s a party. You’re all invited, and we love it when you R.S.V.P.
