Gaia chair

Gaia chair designed by Carlo Bartoli, Italy, imported by Stendig, 1960s. Fiberglass construction.

BLOW chair

This is an inflatable BLOW chair, designed in 1967 by Jonathon De Pas, Donato D'Urbino, Paolo Lomazzi, and Carla Scolari, all Italians. Made by Zanotta. This was the first inflatable chair successfully mass-produced in Italy and is now an icon of Sixties design.

Pierre Paulin No. 577 "tongue" chair

This is a No. 577 chair, commonly called a "Tongue" chair, designed by Pierre Paulin, 1967. It is made of a tubular steel frame covered with foam and fabric. Made by Arifort, still in production.

UP 5 (Donna) chair

This chair and ottoman was designed by Gaetano Pesce (Italian) in 1969... made by C&B Italia (later known as B&B Italia), 1969-76. This chair was shipped compressed and vacuum-packed in a PVC wrapper, and when opened the chair expanded into life! Created as an "art happening", this chair was designed to express Pesce's view of women: "they have always been, against their own wills, prisoners of themselves. So I felt like giving this armchair the shape of a woman with a ball on her feet, which is indeed the traditional image of the prisoner".

Marshmallow Sofa

designed by George Nelson, 1956, made by Herman Miller Furniture Co. This design offered a pragmatic solution for the factory mass-production of upholstered seating... the cushions are standard barstool seats, vinyl covered foam cushions in bright colors, sometimes more than one color in the sofa. This sofa could be made in any length, and as many as ten cushions side by side were made. The sofa shown above is a current production item offered by Herman Miller.

"Ovalia" chair

This is an awesome egg shaped chair designed by Thor Larsen, made by Torlan in Staffanstorp, Sweden (just outside Malmoe in southestern Sweden). It is egg-shaped on a pedestal and has a pair of speakers and a reading light inside.

Verner Panton side chair

Verner Panton side chair, designed 1960-67, produced by Vitra GmbH for Herman Miller International 1968-1979. This chair is significant because it was the first single-piece continuously constructed chair to enter large-scale production. Formed of a single material requiring no assembly, it was economical for production. The design is significant because of the type of plastic, the color, the curved design and its stackability. It was originally marketed in 6 colors: white, black, red, blue, yellow, and green. This chair is an icon of Pop design, the most significant plastic chair produced outside of Italy.

Bertoia Bird chair

"Bird" chair designed by Harry Bertoia, 1951-53, made by Knoll Associates, NYC. Made of steel wire mesh, this sculptural chair came with optional full upholstered cover, or bikini upholstered cover which only covered the seat. Some models had a vinyl coating over the steel mesh. (Bonus!: check out the Saarinen tulip table and the Bertoia side chair in the background) Bertoia was an American, born in Italy, lived 1915-78, and was mainly a sculptor. He also assisted Charles Eames in developing the bent plywood chair, but received little credit for that effort. Click here for more info

Bertoia Diamond chair

"Diamond" chair also by Harry Bertoia, see above. Click here for more info

Aarnio Gyro chair

"Gyro" chair (also called "Pastille" chair), designed by Eero Aarnio, Finnish, 1968. This unique "rocking" chair is made of moulded glass-reinforced polyester. Made by Asko Oy, Finland 1968-1980, and since 1991 it is currently in production again. Aarnio was born in Finland in 1932and studied in Helsinki 1954-57. He opened his own studio in 1962.

Aarnio Ball (or Globe) chair

(Jacobsen designed the building, interior, furniture, light fixtures, carpets, cutlery, and ashtrays!). He lived 1902-71 and his most successful design of furniture was the "Ant" chair still in production today, for which he won a grand prize at the XI Triennale in Milan in 1957.
